Amelie Keating (née Newbury) is a mother of nine beautiful, successful and well-integrated children (if she may say so herself!) Together with her husband Jeff, she is raising her children in the Fair Cape. A great believer in the merit of healthy outdoor living, the benefits of the fresh sea air, access to loads of succulent citrus, peaches, pears, grapes, fields of strawberries ready for the picking and other delicious Cape Produce, not forgetting creamy milk and a great variety of cheeses, all great for the kids (the wines aren’t too bad either, adds Jeff) she found the Cape ticked all the right boxes for raising her family! She moved to the Cape with her family seven years ago and is so very grateful to have been welcomed into the community into which the children are now fully integrated. She and her family are equally grateful for the wonderful schools her children attend - two excellent Senior and Junior Anglican schools; a magical Nursery school attached to the quaintest Anglican Church and home to “Mr and Mrs Chips”; a Junior school for Girls that lies “on the slopes of Table Mountain, ‘neath the shade of Devil’s Peak, in the old Cape Governor’s Garden, by the Liesbeek’s winding creek!” All of these schools feel like extended families and offer a fantastic support system; allowing the children to grow secure in a community and to develop fully as they are “inspired to be individuals” and as they become aware of their social responsibilities; and for this they say, “Ad Dei Gloriam!”
An ardent fan of Table Mountain, Amelie is grateful every day for the opportunity to enjoy a view of this awesome mountain; always visible, splendid and reassuring; serving as a compass and an anchor to the many vibrant peoples of the Cape. She is a firm supporter of the Arts and loves anything to do with Culture, Art, Music and Dance. She is a frequent Theatre-Goer and her two favourite places to visit have to be Artscape and the Baxter, a favourite haunt from her student days. She has a classical background and studied at UCT where she obtained a BA degree in languages; she went back to her Alma Mater on returning to the Cape and obtained first her Honours and then her Masters in French Poetry and Literature, Business French and Translation. She had her ninth child whilst studying for her doctorate and was especially proud to be graduating on the same day as her eldest son, PJ; she was particularly grateful that the French Department granted her ten places at her graduation ceremony; she was even more grateful and impressed that all nine of her children and her husband wanted to attend!
She is in the throws of compiling a book to celebrate the beauty of the Cape, entitled, “The many faces, façades and fashions of the Cape.” She and her husband are thinking of taking a short sabbatical to lecture in the Middle East but the Cape will never be far and South Africa with its beautiful game-parks, rich heritage and wonderful, warm, hospitable people will be only a quick flight away!
